The Annual Civil War Ball

Every August, some of my kids participate in the Ball at the civil war muster. It is held on Saturday night, outdoors in the park.

My oldest daughter went off to college the week before so she didn't go and my oldest son was playing guitar at an event across town.

But five of the kids did go and dance.

This is my group of girls which includes two of my daughters and my daughter-in-law. And also my almost-daughter Ellen as well as the other girls who are like nieces to me.
From left to right, Ellen, Ashley, Emily, Therese, Rachel, and Margaret. (Emily and Margaret are my daughters)
Smile Ladies!
Of course, when I made them pose for photos, we were running late. They gave me a smile and then I said "how about a picture where you aren't look more period correct?"

They obliged, but in the end they just look...suspicious.
I made my boys (Peter and Matthew) pose too -
me: hurry we're late!
Peter: I don't have my vest...
me: just smile!
Peter: with or without the hat?
me: click!

At the dance, Matthew (probably being told what to do by) Margaret and Therese.
This is my daughter-in-law Ashley, (an absolute jewel!) who tells me she doesn't really know much about sewing and yet she made this dress! And all of the underpinnings! Isn't she adorable!
This is my second oldest boy, George, who is escorting Rachel.
I think my favorite part of this ball every year is the preparations, actually. The last-minute sewing, the hair pinning, the lacing of corsets, the yelling for more hairspray....

I spent the hour leading up to the event making period-authentic cell phone bags out of scraps of fabric and some lace.
It's a fun event every year and there are two more balls being held in September so we'll do it all again.

Love the dresses. It looks like geat fun to me. My family likes to attend the Texas Renfest. It is too hot to think about dressing up right now in South Texas!
